Install an invisible zipper using a regular zipper foot (a video tutorial)

Zipper Tutorial: How to install an invisible zipper using a regular zipper foot.
Are you one of those sewers who goes out of their way to avoid projects involving zippers? Have you been forced to do pattern hacks that involve substituting buttons on your adorable skirt and dress projects? Or maybe you’ve just always thought that you needed a special foot to sew an invisible zipper, and just never got around to buying one.
Well, today I’m here to offer some help.
I know far too many seamstresses who have convinced themselves that zippers are “just a little too advanced” for them, so I put together this zipper tutorial to show just how easy it can be. This video with give you a detailed explanation on how to install an invisible zipper using the zipper foot that most likely came with your machine when you purchased it!
I’m starting with the invisible zipper since I just recently used one to make the Flotsam and Jetsam dress, but I’ll be adding more videos (centered, lapped, exposed) as I use them in my projects. Luckily, the invisible zipper is also one of the easiest, and cleanest looking zipper installations, so it seemed like a great place to begin. Go ahead and grab a few pieces of scrap fabric and give it a try. Invisible zippers are a favorite of mine, and I promise you’ll fall in love with them too once you give them a try!

I know zippers, buttonholes, and knits are the three most common, but what’s your biggest sewing fear”?

What do you think would help you overcome it?

    1. Haha, I hadn't even thought of that! I know I was thinking of you when I read one of my books that was set in Wales, but I never think about the accent that goes with the funny words!

    2. If it's any help, I'm English 🙂 I have a friend who refuses to think of me with an English accent and pretends I've got a Welsh accent. Except I haven't 🙂

  1. This is a fantastic tutorial! I'm pinning it. I actually have an invisible zipper foot, but I prefer just using a regular foot because I can get closer to the teeth with it. Zippers do still cause me some stress though. 🙂

  2. Great tutorial!! I can't wait to check out your You Tube channel. I used to be so afraid of zippers and I just installed 2 in a test pattern tote this past weekend and they went in without a hitch. Now, I love zippers and can't wait to put them in my next project.

Stopping by from Sugar & Dots linky party and your newest follower. Here is what I shared this week:

  3. I love sewing invisible zippers this way! They've become my absolute favorite! My fear is a zip front fly. I have made one before, but it was years ago. I will have to refresh eventually because Henry won't always want elastic waist pants!

    1. Haha! They'll wear elastic for as long as we tell them to wear elastic. ;D
I know exactly what you mean about the fly fronts though. I haven't sewn one since college, and wouldn't even know where to start!
