With Aurelia’s summer collection rolling right into the pony sew-along and the opening of the etsy shop, things have been more than a little busy around our house. It seems like it’s been ages since the last time I baked anything, so Reli and I decided to have a little fun in the kitchen last weekend with a pack of those little Wilton sugar eyes.
If you’ve been around awhile, you’ve already seen plenty of pictures of Reli “helping” me bake. Heck, I even made her a mini apron
a few years back, but this is the first time that she really did more than just pour in a few things, and then watch the mixer. If you’ve got smaller kids who enjoy helping out in the kitchen, this is the perfect simple project to help them get involved!
First we mixed up a plain white box cake mix and divided it among a few bowls. Add a tiny bit of food coloring to each one, and just let them mix the heck out of it. Then when the colors are well mixed, spoon them into some mini muffin cups and bake them as normal.
While the cupcakes are cooling, go ahead and mix up a batch of your favorite white icing. (We used our awesome bakery style frosting recipe. The almond is always perfect. Yum!)
Divide this up into multiple bowls too if you’d like, and whip up some more fun colors.
Use a piping bag with a grass tip to pipe on some crazy fur, and let your little one pop on as many eyes as they
think their monsters might need. The more the merrier. It’s so much fun giving them different looks!
You can even make some larger ones if you’d like, but remember…
They may look sweet, but they’re still MONSTERS!

I’ve recently teamed up with some amazing bloggers, and we’ll be bringing you a fun round-up of recipes and crafts at the beginning of each month. Check out these projects for October, and don’t forget to snoop around their blogs and leave them a little comment love.
